State guide
Maine
Maine publishes a customer-facing VIN inspection form, MVT-10, and separately publishes MVT-6 for state-assigned VINs. The MVT-10 form is narrower than many states’ out-of-state transfer rules: it is expressly required for certain foreign-titled vehicles and questionable VINs, while assigned-VIN cases are handled through the Title Section and a BMV detective.

- When a VIN verification is required
- Maine’s published VIN inspection form MVT-10 is required for vehicles 25 model years and newer previously registered or titled in another country and whenever the VIN is questionable; for a new Maine-assigned VIN, the owner files MVT-6 and a BMV detective inspects the vehicle and attaches the assigned VIN.
- Who can do it
- For MVT-10, authorized inspectors are selected BMV employees and agents, full-time law enforcement officers, Maine and New Hampshire licensed dealers only if seller of the vehicle, Maine official inspection stations, and military provost officers; MVT-6 inspections are handled by a Bureau of Motor Vehicle detective.

What to do next
- Use MVT-10 only for the situations printed on the form; it is not for correcting the VIN on a registration.
- If you need a Maine-assigned VIN, mail MVT-6, ownership-chain documents, and the fee to the Title Section; a BMV detective will contact you.
- If you are using a private-sale complaint process, include the MVT-10 and MVT-55 with the complaint packet before BMV investigates.
