State guide

Colorado

Colorado separates a regular VIN inspection from a certified VIN inspection. The regular inspection uses DR 2698 for many out-of-state title situations, while bonded-title, rebuilt/salvage, and kit or assigned-VIN cases use the certified inspection process on DR 2704.

When a VIN verification is required
Colorado requires a regular VIN inspection for many out-of-state title and registration cases, and requires a certified VIN inspection for bonded-title motor vehicles, rebuilt/salvage title procedures, and assigned-VIN or kit-vehicle cases.
Who can do it
Regular DR 2698 inspections may be completed by certified law enforcement, military police, authorized DMV personnel in the state where the vehicle is located, and Colorado rules also recognize inspectors or vehicle-related entities; certified DR 2704 inspections must be completed by a P.O.S.T. certified inspector, and Colorado checklists also refer to certified Colorado law enforcement officers.
Official form
DR 2698 Verification of Vehicle Identification Number (regular); DR 2704 Colorado Certified VIN Inspection (certified).
Fee
$50 per inspection under C.R.S. 42-5-204, with annual inflation adjustment and publication by the executive director; Colorado checklists direct applicants to the CSP inspection page for current pricing.

What to do next

  1. Ask your county motor vehicle office which inspection type you need first, because Colorado uses DR 2698 for regular inspections and DR 2704 for certified inspections.
  2. If the vehicle is bonded-title, rebuilt from salvage, or kit-built, plan on the certified inspection path and keep the inspection under one year old.
  3. County motor vehicle offices handle titling and registration; state driver license offices do not handle those vehicle transactions.
