Kansas

Kansas uses the Motor Vehicle Examination form MVE-1 for most VIN/title inspections, and the Kansas Highway Patrol runs the program with some designee partner locations. Kansas also has a separate TR-65 process when an eligible Kansas resident or business needs an out-of-state VIN verification instead of an in-state MVE-1.

Checked against official sources on October 4, 2026. Rules and links change; confirm with the office listed before you act.

Try a ZIP like 30303, “Travis County” or “Columbus, OH”
When a VIN verification is required
Kansas requires MVE-1 before title application for out-of-state or foreign titles, out-of-state bill-of-sale purchases, certain antique bill-of-sale purchases, repaired salvage or formerly non-highway vehicles, assembled/reconstructed/restored vehicles, and certain boat trailers over 2,001 pounds.
Who can do it
Kansas Highway Patrol inspection stations perform inspections, and some designee partner locations such as sheriff’s or police departments also perform them; TR-65 must be completed by a law enforcement officer when that out-of-state substitute is allowed.

What to do next

  1. Before heading to a station, check whether your location is appointment-only and call first if the site is a designee office.
  2. Bring the vehicle, original signed title, purchase documents, and government-issued ID.
  3. If your Kansas-titled application qualifies while the vehicle is outside Kansas, review TR-65 before arranging a full MVE-1.
