State guide

District of Columbia

The District does not publish a stand-alone civilian VIN-verifier program like some states; instead, DC registration requires a DC inspection, and salvage vehicles add a Metropolitan Police Department anti-theft inspection step. DC DMV publishes one central Inspection Station and routes salvage paperwork through the Southwest Service Center.

When a VIN verification is required
DC requires a valid DC inspection sticker for all vehicles registered in the District, and salvage vehicles must also pass an MPD anti-theft inspection before registration; DC DMV’s public pages do not show a separate bonded-title or homemade/kit VIN-verifier program.
Who can do it
DC DMV performs the vehicle inspection at its Inspection Station, and the Metropolitan Police Department Auto Theft Unit performs the anti-theft inspection certification for salvage vehicles.

What to do next

  1. If your out-of-state tags are still valid, DC says you may use them to take the vehicle through inspection before registration.
  2. If your out-of-state tags are expired, visit a DC DMV service center first for a temporary DC registration so you can get inspected.
  3. For a salvage vehicle, complete the DC inspection first, then follow the MPD anti-theft form and submit the salvage package through the Southwest Service Center.
